The Argentine Cup celebrates 10 years

The most federal tournament in the country, organized by Torneos, had its debut on August 31, 2011, with nine simultaneous matches between First D teams.


The Copa Argentina, the official tournament of the Argentine Football Association organized by Torneos and scheduled by AFA, and the only competition in which all categories of Argentine football take part in, celebrates its 10th anniversary this Tuesday, August 31.

The champion of the first edition was Boca Juniors, who beat Racing 2-1 in the final. Throughout these ten years, 328 clubs, almost 20.000 players, and nearly a thousand referees and coaches participated in the tournament. In addition, 14 provinces plus the City of Buenos Aires received matches in the Final Phase.

 

 

"It is really incredible to see what the Copa Argentina has generated for a decade and the effect it has on the fans. We decided to hold a federal tournament where teams from all categories and places in Argentina coexist. We are proud to bring first level matches to the whole country. We are proud to bring world-class matches across the country”, said Alex Ganly, Director of Competitions in Torneos.

 

Some data from the championship

The top winner of the Argentine Cup is River Plate, with three titles won in the 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2018/19 editions. It is also the club that played the most games (37). The other champions are Boca Juniors (2), Arsenal, Huracán and Rosario Central (1).

Throughout the first decade of the tournament, 3,395 goals were scored in 1,490 matches. Ramon Abila is the top scorer with 12 goals and the match with the most goals was Chaco For Ever 7 - Sanjustino San Justo 4 in the Initial Phase of the 2013/14 edition.
